We love interns! The Spectrum is student-run.You can get college credit to help us run innovative programs, and we train you how to do it, and support you while you learn. We have two jobs that students can do for credit or just for the experience: You can be part of our Leadership Team or you can be an Activity Intern.
Be part of the Leadership Team: We are looking for leadership team members to help us coordinate The Spectrum on campus. A leadership team has 3 members: a site supervisor, an intern coordinator, and marketing and recruiting specialist. We specifically train you on how to do your role. You get week-by-week checklists for what to do, and we are always available to support you. The team commits to the program for an entire school year, and spends 5 or less hours per week working on The Spectrum (including a weekly meeting, the time the kids attend, and your list of responsibilities). The experience is wonderful for developing leadership skills and acquiring supervisory experience. Meeting times are flexible each semester, and are agreed on by the team.
Be a Group Intern: Activity Interns receive specific training about planning and facilitating cool stuff for kids to do. We teach you how to manage a group of kids, come up with sweet games or projects, and make them autism-friendly. The training you receive and the experience you get as an Activity Intern is great preparation to work in the special needs field or recreation field. Activity Interns commit to about 2 hours per week for a semester (we make allowances for holiday vacations and spring break).
Please fill out this internship application if you would like to intern with us. If you have questions about being an intern, please give us a call at 828-458-0313, or send us an email!
